The cottage is much brighter and pleasanter than when Kaiia lived here alone, before Daemon's birth.

Daemon walked into the living room, and looked at Cassie with a grin. She was slouched in an armchair, with her back to the window, flipping through the pages of a magazine in a bored way.
"You going to sit there all day?" he asked.

Cassie looked up at her cousin, her expression sour. "What do you care?" she snarled. She was sick of this place - the simple furnishings, the constant roaring of the river outside, the fresh air. "I hate it here! If my stupid mother hadn't died, I'd still be living in town, right next to Diagon Alley," she said, her tone petulant.

Daemon stared at the girl. Ironically, she had a stronger resemblance to her aunt than he did, with her red hair and pale, translucent skin. He'd noticed that Cassie had shown very little grief for her mother, barely shedding a tear even when his mother had arrived at Hogwarts at the very end of the summer term to break the news to her. But this was the first time she'd come right out and said what was really on her mind. He shrugged, not sure how to respond.
"Maybe if you did something besides sit and read those dumb fashion magazines, you'd like it better here," he pointed out.

Cassie's lip curled scornfully. She couldn't expect Daemon to understand - he'd grown up here. "Well maybe I would if there was actually something to do. But there isn't anything - unless you like playing in the woods, which I don't!" She dropped her magazine on the floor beside her, and looked moodily around the room. "I don't see why I couldn't just go on living in my house. It was mine, after all, your mother had no right to rent it out."

Daemon shook his head slightly. "Cassie, you're only 14. No-one would let you live alone. And it's not like my mother's keeping the money from the rent herself. It all goes into your vault in Gringotts. She'd be justified in keeping some for herself, she's paying your expenses at Hogwarts. It's not like your mother or father had any money."

"Don't you talk about my father as if he's dead!" Cassie flared. "At least I know who my father is! You don't know who yours is - I bet even your mother isn't sure!" She turned away from Daemon, staring sulkily at the empty fireplace. "I wish we were back at school. At least there are people there that I like!"

Daemon just laughed aggravatingly. His mother had promised to tell him the name of his father when he came of age. And that was barely six months away. Cassie's jibes just bounced off him. When she talked about people at school, he grinned slyly.
"People like Al Potter?" he suggested. "I've seen the way you look at him, bet you've got a crush on him," he teased. "I'm surprised you like him - you know he's a half-blood, don't you? And who his dad is...?"

"I wouldn't expect you to understand," Cassie shouted, turning to storm up the stairs to her bedroom. "Boys are so immature..."
She was surprised to find tears springing to her eyes as she ran up the stairs.

Daemon stood aside as Cassie rushed past him. She'd been doing that all summer, storming around in a temper. He felt a bit bad about it, he shouldn't have talked about her mother having no money. Poor kid, she had to be missing her mother, even if she pretended otherwise.
And it was a bit much, him teasing her about Al. After all, he was looking forward to school himself, even though it meant being back in the crowded castle again, because of a certain classmate... well, and because of that cute gamekeeper, he thought with a grin. She was way too old for him, in her twenties, but he could still enjoy looking at her!
Smirking to himself, Daemon went upstairs to his own room, to change into the shorts he wore for swimming. Cassie might be happy to slouch around indoors all summer, but he intended to make the most of his freedom.
