Josh sat at the kitchen table, eating breakfast with one hand, while the other hand held Bethi on his knee. She and her brother were now lively toddlers, and Bethi had already finished eating her bowl of dry Cheeri-Owls, and was now making occasional grabs for the food on Josh's plate. On Josh's other side, Bastian was still in his high-chair, thoughtfully eating his own cereal, picking up each little 'O' separately and eating daintily (Bethi preferred to eat hers in fistfuls). And Dara was giving little Merope her morning bottle. It was a very peaceful, domestic scene, with the sun shining in the windows, and the pleasant sound and smell of coffee brewing.
A flutter of wings at the open window made Josh look up, and when the post owl landed, he took the copy of the Daily Prophet from the bird and paid it. After the owl was gone, Josh took a sip of orange juice, and unfolded the newspaper.
The headline made him choke, and almost spit out the juice. He swallowed, and read the text under the photo, starting to feel slightly nauseated.

Kildara smiled at little Merope as she sucked noisily on the bottle. The little girl was growing up way too fast for her liking. She was only a few months old, but she was growing, and Kildara was not looking forward to another baby not being a baby yet. She heard the owl come in and out of the window, then Josh choked. She looked up in alarm, to see him horrified by something he was reading in the paper. The twins were also silent and still, picking up on the moods of the adults in the room.
"Josh, what is it?" she asked him, rying to lean a little closer.

Josh looked up when Dara spoke. He cleared his throat, then passed the newspaper to his wife. To the left of the headline was a photo of an elderly witch with dyed-blonde hair and too much makeup, with the words: Report by Rita Skeeter, exclusive to the Daily Prophet. Under the headline 'Hogwarts Headmaster's Shock Wedding' was a photo of Lucius Malfoy with a very beautiful young woman, followed by the text: Excitement was running high at Hogwarts yesterday, following the surprise announcement by headmaster Lucius Malfoy that he had earlier that afternoon married Hogwarts groundskeeper, Sara Isabelle Desjardins. The new Mrs Malfoy, aged 23, youngest daughter of prominent purebloods Gervais and Marielle Desjardins, professed herself to be "deliriously happy" following her nuptials. Professor Malfoy, 68, stated that he "looks forward to many happy years with my new bride". Malfoy's son, Draco, 42, who recently disowned his own oldest son, Scorpius, following the boy's shock marriage to Rose Weasley, could not be reached for comment.

Kildara read the article on the front of the paper she had been handed. As she read, her eyes widened, and looked kind of grossed out. She dropped the Daily Prophet on the table as if it was something really disgusting. Looking up at Josh, her look turned to sympathy. It had to be hard for him, now it was out that he was actually Malfoy's son, to see this. "I'm sure they'll be happy," she said with an uncertain attempt at diplomacy, but ruined it with - "Though I don't see how she could be happy with him. He's a grandfather, 40 years older than her." She shuddered, causing little Merope to gurgle in protest. She knew what Lucius Malfoy was like though. He was dashing and rather hard to resist, though he had been over ten years younger when she had been forced into his bed. "I bet she's pregnant... that's why they're married!"

"Great-grandfather," Josh murmured absently, thinking of the little girl Scorpius Malfoy had fathered. He was staring at the newspaper lying on the table. "He's three times her age," he said, revulsion in his voice. Obviously his tastes haven't changed." He looked up at his wife; she'd been one of Malfoy's victims... as, of course, had his own mother, nearly forty years ago.
At Dara's comment, he nodded. "Yeah, she must be, for him to have married her. They say he's furious with Draco for not preventing Scorpius from getting married... what's the betting he disowns Draco now he's got another kid on the way. Picked himself a nice respectable pureblood girl, didn't he."

"Great-grandfather," Kildara agreed. That made it even worse. She smiled weakly at him. "Aren't you glad he couldn't claim you! You'd have to endure all this mayhem closer to home." She tried a tight giggle. To be honest, the thought of a 68 year old Malfoy bedding a girl a few years younger than herself was making her physically sick. "He'd have to make sure it's a boy first. Even then he might wait a little, to make sure the child lives past the first few months. Even young healthy girls can give birth to sick kids. And she's a new wife, so he wouldn't know if she can give him strong boys yet. She's certainly young enough to still have years ahead of her to give him heirs." She could still remember her father giving her the 'give your husband boys' talk when she'd been married the first time, straight out of school.

Josh nodded grimly as Dara talked through the possibilities. "He picked a woman with many childbearing years ahead. And I'm sure he made certain it was a boy before he married her. They say he was married to his first wife for years before she managed to produce a kid."
He looked up at Dara and managed a smile. "I don't think he really wanted me, he was just trying to get back at my mother. But I'm so glad he failed. I'd have hated to have him as a father - or Draco as an older brother!" He shuddered slightly. "You know what had happened at Hogwarts when I was in third year; it was frightening enough being evacuated from the school, knowing what life would be like if Voldemort won. But the Malfoys were held hostage in their own home, he treated them brutally. If Malfoy been able to get custody of me, I'd have been there too."

Kildara leaned forward to put a hand on his arm as he spoke. She had to shift Merope in the process so as not to squash the baby. Sabastian had gone back to studying his food, and Bethi was stealing food off Josh's plate while they apparently weren't looking. "Well, I'm glad it didn't happen. We probably wouldn't have met, or met under very different circumstances. I suppose I was lucky... I wasn't old enough to know what was going on much. I wasn't much older than the twins. But I do remember being told my parents were going somewhere and that I had to say goodbye, because they might not come back. I was around for the second lot, on the losing side, of course. I don't really know what any of it was like, that fear... I was bought up thinking that what Voldemort had done, and what the others that followed him had and would do was right." She shrugged, breaking herself out of her weird rambling.
"Everything'll be alright. It's weird to think that that girl, whose younger than me, is now like your... I don't know... blood step-mother or something..."

Josh smiled at his wife's touch. "That's true," he said when she talked about meeting under different circumstances. "One more reason to be glad he didn't succeed."
He nodded. "That whole school year was a nightmare. Mum and Dad didn't want us to be at Hogwarts that year, but they didn't have much choice. And then knowing the Death Eaters were approaching - and that Malfoy was among them."
He looked at his three children, so happy and (at the moment) peaceful. "I just hope they never have to go through anything like that."

"Yeah, me too," Kildara nodded, following his gaze around at their children. Hopefully nothing would happen to disturb the peace anytime soon."Anything more cheerful we can talk about?" she asked settling Merope back go her arms properly to finish feeding the little girl."I'm thinking of buying the robe shop in Hogsmeade... what do you think?"

Josh smiled. "Yeah, of course." He picked up the offending copy of the Daily Prophet and threw it onto the counter where they didn't have to look at it.
He listened with interest to her comment about the robe shop. "You mean Gladrags? Would you keep the shop on Diagon Alley too, or transfer the whole business to Hogsmeade?"

Kildara nodded."Yeah, Gladrags. It's for sale. I was thinking of keeping both... it's not like I work anyway, I could just get someone to run it like I do for the Diagon Alley store. What do you reckon? I think it'll be a good investment."
