Feeling extremely awkward, Scorpius walked with Rose to the Gryffindor table. He could see that Rose was flushed and anxious, but holding her head up proudly, as she carried their daughter. Just this once they were going to bring the little girl to the Great Hall for supper. It was planned that normally they'd have supper in their own little suite of rooms that had been allotted to them. They were, after all, legally married, everything was as respectable as they could make it.
At last they reached a space at the table, right near the front, and sat down. Scorp didn't feel quite so obvious now, but it would take a long time before he'd get used to the changed circumstances.
Scorpius glanced towards the Staff table. He'd been hearing whispers ever since they'd arrived at Kings Cross that the old head had quit, and he was curious to see who had been appointed. But the ornately-carved chair was empty. And the rest of the staff looked... well, frankly they looked stunned. Scorpius frowned. What could have happened to make them look like that?

Al walked into the hall, green eyes scanning the quickly filling tables. For a moment his gaze rested on Scorpius Malfoy and his wife. Rose was holding the baby in her arms, and her friends were already gushing over the small infant.
He was glaring childishly, he knew. The malice he felt surprised him a bit, but that girl was of no relation to him. Unbeknownst to the rest of the family, Scorpius wasn’t the only one who had been disowned. Already Al was referring to his cousin as Mrs. Malfoy in his mind, often accompanied by a sneer.
He moved on from the sickeningly happy family. The green eyes that attracted so much unwanted attention (third generation eyes they were, but diluted with hazel and gray) inspected the staff table, and Al’s dark eyebrows met together in a frown. The headmaster’s seat was empty, and the expressions of the remainder of staff looked bewildered.
Immediately Al went into a defensive mode, left hand subconsciously searching for his pocketed wand. Just in case. He took his place near the head of the Slytherin table, where the prefects sat. He ran a hand through his dark hair, something James always did and Al only did when agitated. Around the Great Hall, he could see his cousins and their friends. The Weasley/Potter clan fanned out over the Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Gryffindor tables, but he was the only one who sat at the Slytherin table and his spine straightened tensely.
James wore his Gryffindor badge proudly; there was nothing stopping Al from doing the same with his Slytherin emblem.

Daemon nodded to Al as he found a place at the Slytherin table. Al looked worried, and Daemon looked around, following his gaze. So the new Head wasn't here yet. They'd have to wait a bit longer to find out who it was.
But Daemon wasn't all that interested at the moment. He was looking around to see if Jessika was in the Great Hall yet. He could see his cousin, sitting a bit further along the table, a scowl on her face as usual. He'd have thought she'd be happy to be back - it wasn't as if she'd enjoyed the summer. He shrugged. That was Cassie, always finding something to complain about. But he couldn't see Jessika. The table was filling up fast, so he took off his hat and put it on the bench beside him, saving a place for her.

The Headmaster paused on the threshold of the Great Hall. Not because he was nervous - far from it. He just wanted to savour the moment, preserve this moment in his memory.
Lifting his chin slightly, and inhaling, he stepped forward, leaving the ante room, and emerging into the hall. He smiled to himself as a sudden wave of muttering swept the room, followed by a stunned silence. Just as he'd hoped. He did love to make an entrance.
He walked unhurriedly towards the carved chair in the centre of the staff table, taking his time, admiring the way his dark purple robes rippled as he walked.
Before he sat, he glanced towards the back of the hall, nodding slighly to the professor in charge of the first years.
As the little throng of eleven year olds made their way towards the front of the hall - most of them already too terrified at the thought of facing the sorting hat to immediately realize what was going on - the rest of the students continued to stare at the staff table, watching in shocked silence as Lucius Malfoy took his place in the Headmaster's chair.

Scorpius felt the shock go through him like a jolt of electricity. No. For a second or two his brain refused to accept what he was seeing. His grandfather... taking the headmaster's chair. No. It had to be some kind of joke. But the sorting was about to proceed, and the staff, while they still looked shocked, didn't look as if they didn't know what was going on.
Who the hell would appoint one of Voldemort's closest confidants as Headmaster of Hogwarts? This would be a disaster. Anyone who wasn't a pureblood - and some of those who were - would have to constantly watch their back all year.
Instinctively, Scorpius moved closer to Rose, putting his arm protectively around her and their daughter.

Professor Malfoy sat regally in his throne as the sorting proceeded. Whenever the hat yelled 'Slytherin', he glanced at the student, noting which had been sorted into his house. But most of the time, his eyes were sweeping the Slytherin table, looking for one face in particular. He didn't see him. Surely he would not be at another table...
Then, as he glanced at the next student to be sorted into Slytherin, he caught sight of the boy he was looking for. At the Gryffindor table. His lip curled in disgust at the thought of a Malfoy sitting with Gryffindors.
His grandson was staring at him, his expression horrified, as he put his arm around the little slut and their mongrel. Meeting Scorpius's gaze, an evil smile touched the Headmaster's lips. The boy was afraid.
He should be.

It had taken a little longer for Jessika to get off the train and get sorted than most people. Apparently being a Lestrange makes them check you more, even though she'd never put a toe out of line in the 4 years she'd been here so far. Finally coming into the hall, and made her way down the Slytherin Table, searching for Daemon. She found him and walked over her him. Taking his hat off the chair beside him, she dropped it in front of him. "I'm stealing this seat," she chuckled as she sat down. A hush went over the Hall, then it erupted in mutters as the new Headmaster walked out into the Hall. Jessika's eyes widened, and she gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Okay... now THAT was a shock. "faaarck," she muttered under her breath. At last, Jessika appeared in the hall. It seemed the tension from the train ride was forgotten, as she gave him his hat back and sat down. He grinned at her. "That's good because I was saving..." he started, but his voice tailed off as Jessika's eyes widened, an expression of shock moving over her face. "What...?" He turned to look in the same direction, and his exclamation was a lot ruder than Jessika's, and definitely not under his breath. If there was one person his mother hated more than Remus Lupin, it was Lucius Malfoy - though she'd never explained why. But he knew that people on both sides of the last war hated Malfoy. Not to mention the comments he'd heard Scorpius making about his grandfather. This was going to be very interesting.

Professor Malfoy looked back at the Slytherin table, locating the student who'd made that unmannerly comment. He didn't know the boy's name, but he had an oddly familiar face. The son of some old acquaintance, perhaps. He would enquire when he summoned the boy for detention. Such language in the Great Hall would not be tolerated.
The sorting continued, and Lucius let his gaze stray, rather bored with the lengthy process. He paused, his eyes resting on a young woman seated at the extreme far left of the staff table. In her early twenties, he estimated, with long dark hair and brilliant blue eyes. And a strangely forlorn expression, as she watched the sorting. She sighed, and turned her head, unexpectedly meeting his gaze.
Not at all dismayed at being caught staring, Lucius smiled, and inclined his head slightly in her direction. The young woman blushed a fiery red, and looked down at her hands, resting on the table in front of her.
Lucius's smile widened; she really was quite intriguing. He must find out more about her as soon as the feast was over. He had returned to Hogwarts with a particular purpose in mind, but it seemed that there might well be some amusing diversions too.

Sara was watching the youngsters being sorted. They looked so young, so vulnerable. They reminded her of herself at the same age; she had been painfully nervous, with so much to live up to - four sisters already at the school, three in Slytherin. She knew, as soon as she was sorted into Ravenclaw, that her parents would be furious; but as she stumbled to the table, Nathalie had welcomed her with a smile and a hug. Ever since, Nat had been the one she clung to, the one who reassured her, made her feel accepted.
But lately, Nat had been too preoccupied with her quest to start a family to spend much time with Sara; even when they met, Nathalie had been distracted. Sara sighed, turning her head to look at her sister, but instead, she found herself looking directly at the new headmaster. Somehow unable to look away, she saw him smile at her, and something in that smile sent a jolt through her, as if he'd discovered her naked; a scalding wave of shame washed over her, and she looked down quickly, knowing that the idea of him seeing her naked should disgust her; only problem was, it didn't!

The headmaster's gaze swung over and fastened on Daemon. Crap! He must have heard what Daemon said. From the look in those grey eyes, he was going to hear more about it later. Great. Daemon wondered what kind of detentions Malfoy would give out.
Beside him, Jessika cringed slightly, and when that penetrating gaze finally moved on, Daemon leaned a little closer, and muttered, "You okay?" He didn't think Jess had too much to worry about - he'd heard that Jess's father and Malfoy had been close friends at school.
