Sara pushed open the door to the office and smiled politely at the blonde man behind the desk. She had to admit, like her, he had aged very well, unlike her poor, unfortunate Rabastan, whose mental state had caused him to go completely downhill.
She let him hold her chair as she sat, then watche dhim walk back around to his chair. She listened as he explained what had happened with Jessika, and asked for her help.
"When we're younger, and raised outside the coven, our powers are harder to control, because we're not taught all the time to control them. I try as hard as I can to help Jessika, but she's here all the time, and it's only me at home to assist her in her Fire studies. Plus, she's a lot less mature than I was at her age, that's a factor."
She shrugged. "So it is VERY possible for accidents like what happened to occur. One wrong word, too much emotion, such as excitement or nervousness, can set it off."

Lucius nodded, giving every impression of listening intently to Sara's explanation. "So it was, as she explained, an unfortunate side effect of her rather special magic. You understand, of course, that I had to be sure."
He leaned back in his chair. "I think, then, that I will give Jessika a second chance. Naturally, she will have to be punished for taking a book without authorization - and for her recklessness in attempting spells from that book. But I think that detention will suffice for both offences. But she must understand that she must make every effort to control her magic. I have to consider the safety of the other students - as well as Jessika's own safety of course."
Lucius looked thoughtful for a moment. "Sara... I beg your pardon... Mrs Lestrange - it might be as well if you were to speak to Jessika today, and impress upon her the seriousness of the situation. And... perhaps it might be possible for her to spend the occasional weekend at home during the term, so that you can help her with her control issues."

Sara nodded. "Of course. I wouldn't have expected you to just let it go." Her eyes discreetly scanned the portraits, her fiery eyes landing on the empty spot where her portrait would one day hang. Hopefully not in the too near future.
He called her Sara, instead of the formal Mrs Lestrange, reclaiming her attention. To be entirely honest, she wasn't pompous enough for this life. She never had been. So when someone just treated her like a person, not a social object, they automatically had her attention.
"Yes, uhm I was ask you that. If I could speak with her. About her taking time off... I suppose I could do that. It's hard timewise at the moment, what with Rabastan being so sick. But I agree Jess definitely needs help."

Lucius noticed Sara looking at the portraits, and wondered, with an inward smile, what she would be thinking, had she already been occupying a portrait, considering the reaction of the other portraits to his exploits the other night.
Then she mentioned Rabastan, and his expression changed slightly. "How is Rabastan?" he asked abruptly. Contrary to popular belief, Lucius suffered from occasional attacks of humanity; Rabastan had been his closest friend at school, and it disturbed him to think of the state that the man was in now.

Sara shrugged when Lucius asked about how Rabastan was. "Sometimes I think they might let him come home. He's so ... with it... But most of the time he just rambles, hardly sleeps, hardly eats." She sighed. Despite being so happy she was now free of Rab's constant smothering, she did miss him, and would hate it if anything really bad happened to him.
"It's hard to watch sometimes. It's hard for Jess too... you can see why her control is a little out of whack."

Lucius nodded, listening to Sara's description. "All those years in Azkaban - it was bound to take a toll," he murmured. He suppressed a shudder; he'd spent less than a year in that hellhole, but it still returned to haunt his dreams occasionally, even all these years later. Still, the fact that Rab still had lucid periods suggested that perhaps recovery wasn't out of the question...
"Indeed," he said, when Sara pointed out that the situation with Rabastan would have an unsettling effect on Sara. "Leniency in her case is definitely indicated."
He got up and went over to the fireplace which was connected to the rest of the castle via the internal floo network, and requested that a Slytherin prefect inform Jessika that her presence was required in his office, then returned to his desk to wait.

Sara nodded, and watched him walk over to a fireplace, sending a message to Jessika. As Lucius sat back down at his desk, the woman smiled. "Oh, I should congratulate you on your grandchild... and great grandchild I believe." That was sure to strike a nerve. Everyone knew about Scorpius and Rose Malfoy. And Lucius' reaction to it all.

Lucius inclined his head slightly at Sara's mention of Draco's second son, but before he could reply in suitably non-committal tones, she mentioned that unspeakable little mudblood halfbreed of Scorpius's. His expression tightened.
"Even the purest family trees need a little pruning," he said acidly. "Fortunately Draco had the guts to perform it." No need to mention his intention to do some pruning of his own. There would be time enough for that when Sara Desjardins was carrying his son.
"I have visited my new grandchild. Frankly I have my doubts about its future - it does not appear to be particularly healthy." His tone was cold, unconcerned.

Sara chuckled lightly. "Mine doesn't," she replied with a haughty little smile. She didn't want to completely piss him off, he might take back his offer to keep Jessika in school, but it was fun to make him feel like he wasn't the top of the wozza anymore.
"So you think he may not make it? Or that he's just not a good family heir. Not 'strong' enough for the Malfoy 'name'."

Lucius shrugged dismissively. "The child seems sickly. And frankly I have my doubts about Draco's ability to raise him correctly - considering how Scorpius turned out. However, time will tell." He glanced towards the door, at the sound of a nervous knock.
"Enter!"

Sara shrugged. "You never know, he may surprise you," she said. Her head turned as there was a knock on the door and it opened. Her daughter's amber eyes, identical to Sara's, widened, seeing her mother sitting in the chair in front of the Headmaster's desk.
"Professor... Mother," Jessika said nervously.
Sara smiled. "Jessika." She turned to Lucius. "Is there somewhere I can talk to my daughter privately?"

Lucius inclined his head graciously. "As I have business I must attend to elsewhere, you are welcome to use my office." He stood up, and walked around the desk.
"Miss Lestrange - you are to remain as a student at Hogwarts. There will, of course, be punishment - your head of house will give you the details. In the meantime, your mother wishes to speak with you."
He turned to Sara, extending his hand.
"Thank you for coming, Mrs Lestrange." Picking up his walking stick, he turned, and strode from the room.

"Thank you Professor," Sara replied, and took his outstretched hand momentarily. Then he left the office. Sara stood up and motioned for Jessika to sit down. The girl complied.
"Jessika, you have to understand how lucky you are to keep your place here. I know being what you are is hard, believe me I know. You're different to everone, and accidents like this happen. Professor Malfoy has pulled out the stops to keep you here. You will spend some weekends at home with me, so we can continue your Fire control studies during the term."
The girl nodded. "Mum you know it was an accident. I - I would never use it against someone. You - You know that!"
Sara sighed and knelt down, folding her long thin legs underneath her, in front of her daughter. "Jessie, I know. I've had accidents like this too. But you still need to learn from them. Treating it like it never happened will not help. You need to learn to control it. So that is what we will be doing."
"Okay. I - I - Yeah, I get it."

Lucius leaned back in his chair, and glanced at the ornate clock on the wall. It was almost 9 pm. He expected Cori to show up any moment.

Cori made her way up to the headmaster's office at the time he'd said in his message. Standing outside the door, she knocked. As she waited, she ran her fingers through her hair and smoothed her skirt.
