"Winthrop! You useless rat, where are you?" Alicia whispered fiercely. She was crouching down in the first-floor corridor, heart pounding in her ears... she was late for class, and her errant rat had scampered off again. She wasn't entirely sure it was her rat, considering it seemed to behave more like her father's late toad, Trevor. Sure, he had been teased for "losing" the poor beast, but the way Winthrop acted, it was less of a loss and more of the stupid thing running off at inopportune times.
Hovering low near the charms classroom door, she skirted it and paused, seeing a little rat-but swerve around the corner and into...
Aw heck. Somehow, fate had conspired against her. Somehow, she was now stuck standing outside the boys' bathroom. Of course, this would be a great opportunity to just run to class, but she couldn't just leave her poor rat out there to get eaten by someone's cat. Her mother would never forgive her.
Taking a deep, nervous breath, she pushed the door open and slid into the wrong bathroom, praying there were no boys peeing in there already.
"Winthrop?"

Daemon was standing at the urinal when he heard a faint skittering, like tiny claws on the stone floor. He ignored it; probably mice, he told himself vaguely.
Then he heard a voice calling a name. Unmistakeably a girl's voice! With a faint yelp, he put himself away, zipped up and pulled his robes protectively around himself. Thank Merlin he'd just finished!
He turned around, outraged, to see who was violating the sanctity of the boys' bathroom.
"Alicia! This is the boy's bathroom! What the heck are you doing in here?" he demanded.

Alicia yelped and covered her eyes, turning around even though Daemon was clearly finished. "I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry!" She wailed, peering through her fingers at the ground to see if her rat was anywhere nearby.
"I lost my rat again, he ran in here and I was just trying to find him!" Her cheeks were bright red with embarrassment, her tone flustered. Of all the people who had to be in the bathroom, it had to be a Slytherin, and it had to be Daimon. She was scared of him, although she wasn't entirely sure why. Alicia was scared of a lot of things, come to think of it.
"Please don't tell anyone!" She begged. "I just want to find Winthrop! Will you help me look?" Still she faced the wall, eyes covered, embarrassed silly.

Now he had recovered from the surprise, Daemon grinned. "Your rat? Oh, okay. Well if you saw him come in here, we should be able to find him."
The poor girl seemed even more horrified than he had been. She had her back to him, and apparently was covering her eyes. "Hey, Alicia, don't worry about it. I won't tell anyone." Though she was in a different house, and a year behind him, Daemon knew Alicia - she was the kid of one of the professors, after all. He hadn't paid a lot of attention to her, except to notice vaguely that she seemed to be afraid of him. But coming from a known Death Eater family, he was used to that. Still, he like to think he wasn't like some of the other Slytherins.
"It's okay, you can look - I'm decent," he assured her, unable to stop grinning. ""Look, you stand by the door, and I'll check the cubicles, see if he's hiding there. I'll flush him out - " Daemon chuckled as the unintentional pun struck him. "Sorry, I mean, I'll shoo him out, and you can catch him. What did you say his name is? Winthrop?" He smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring manner.

Face still flushed with mortification, Alicia turned around, dropping her hands from her eyes. Her head was tilted downwards a bit, and she looked sheepishly up at him through her eyelashes. "Um, yes. Winthrop. If... if you'd check the stalls, I'd... be really grateful. Yeah." She couldn't help but giggle at his flush comment, cupping her hands over her mouth as she did so.
So maybe he wasn't that bad. Her dad always said that there was no reason to be scared of individuals, especially before you got to know them, but the little Hufflepuff was the nervous sort. She took after her mother in that respect, really.
"Thanks, um, Daimon." Alicia mumbled, shuffling backwards to lean against the wall. She squawked as she backed into the handle of the door, blushing again and shifting to press her back to the cold stone of the bathroom wall instead of the oaken door.

Daemon gave Alicia a quizzical look when she squawked, but then shrugged and began to look in the stalls. In the third one he checked, he spotted a long tail sticking out from behind the u-bend. "I think I see him," he said softly. He got down on his hands and knees, and crawled closer, trying to see what was there. "Yeah, I think it's him..." He reached out, thinking he'd be able to just pick up the rat and save Alicia a chase.
Just as his fingers touched the furry back, the rat glanced up and saw him - and sank his teeth into Daemon's thumb. Daemon yelped, and jerked back, yelling again as he hit his head on the toilet-paper dispenser.
"He's heading your way!" he yelled, as the rat scuttled out of the stall, towards the door. He got up and turned to Alicia, sucking on his bitten thumb. "Did you get him?"

Hearing Daemon's yell, Alicia looked down just as the fat rodent scurried towards her feet. She swept down and scooped him up, clutching the squirming little thing to her chest protectively. "Winthrop!" She scolded angrily. "Did you bite him? Bad boy! Very bad boy! Don't ever do that agai-- OW!"
She squealed as her pet bit her and dropped the flailing rat onto the tile with a soft thwump. Squeaking excitedly, Winthrop made a run for it, back towards the sinks. Whimpering and holding her bitten index finger out, she scrambled after him. "Winthrop! Come back, you stupid thing! Oooooh! You're in so much trouble!" She was cute, in a silly and slightly helpless way, as she crawled under the sinks and scrabbled for her rodent.
"Daemon! Get in on the other side and trap him in!" She begged, feet kicking wildly from beneath the sinks as she tried to get her hands on Winthrop.

Daemon started to relax as Alicia caught the rat, and began to scold him. Apparently the nip he'd received hadn't been personal - there was a yelp and a dull thud as Alicia's pet bit her, and fell to the ground once more.
Daemon couldn't help chuckling as Alicia made a dive for the sinks, and continued the chase. If he'd had a little sister, this was the kind he'd have liked. She was a nice kid, even if she couldn't keep track of Winthrop. Then she yelled for him to help, and he dropped to his knees, positioning his hands to block the rat's escape.
"Does he often run off like this?" he asked. It was lucky he had a free period right now - he couldn't imagine how he'd have explained this as a reason for being late for class!

"Daddy says -- oomph -- that he thinks Winthrop is just Trevor in a new, furry body. I think I -- rmphrgh -- agree!" She grumbled, trying to grab for the pestilent little rodent with her little fingers. "Darn it, Winthrop!" Alicia wailed, her voice echoing around the sinks. "Come back here! You're making me late for charms!!"
The rat looked around, almost guiltily, at those words. He had stopped, sitting on the tile like a quivering little lump, obviously overexcited. Snapping her mouth shut with a baleful look at the little beast, Alicia scooted forward a little more, not realizing that in the process she was pulling her own skirt down. A hint of very silly underpants with dancing monkeys on them showed around her hips as she extended her fingers to the rodent.
"Please, Winthrop?" She whispered softly. "C'mere, boy. C'mon, it's all right. Me an' Daemon won't hurt you, I promise." Alicia clucked softly with her tongue, a reassuring sound.

"Trevor?" Alicia spoke as if he should know who Trevor was. Daemon tried to remember if his mum had mentioned anything about Professor Longbottom knowing someone called Trevor, but drew a blank.
Shrugging, he leaned under the sink, hoping they'd catch the rat soon, and his eyes widened. Did Alicia realize that crawling under the sink was pulling her skirt lower? Should he say something or would it just embarass her more? Then he had to stifle a laugh; really, he knew better, he should just tell her that her skirt had slipped, or something, but he couldn't resist saying, "Ummm - Alicia - I think the monkeys are trying to escape too!"

"Trevor," she said softly, wiggling her fingers temptingly at the rat, who cocked his head to one side. His little wet nose quivered, whiskers twitching as he slowly slunk towards her. "Trevor was my dad's toad. Da-- err, Professor Longbottom was always chasing after him, apparently." Alicia clucked again, rubbing her fingers together encouragingly at the suspect rodent.
She paused as he mentioned monkeys. "What are you talk--" she began, then blushed so violently that her face and neck were a brilliant crimson in a matter of seconds. Alicia looked away from the rat to see her yellow panties standing out over her skirt, where little dancing monkeys winked at her cheekily. Slowly looking back at Daemon, she scooted away, covering herself and swallowing.
"C'mon, Winthrop..." she said weakly. "Can we please go before I do something else horribly embarrassing?"

The poor girl looked like she wanted to fall through the floor with embarassment, and Daemon had to bite his lip. Really this whole situation was just becoming more surreal by the moment. He watched as Alicia scooted backwards - and the movement sent the rat, who had been creeping towards her, scuttling off in alarm. The fat little furball was heading right for him!
Reacting instinctively, Daemon brought his cupped hands down over the rat. He was fully expecting to get bitten again - but Winthrop seemed to be investigating his prison before acting. Daemon chuckled as he felt the rat's whiskers tickling the palms of his hands.
"Alicia - I've got him!"
