Daemon shrugged, shaking his head slightly. Pretty much standard for Cassie.
Lately, his mother had told him a little more about Cassie's father - Aegir Mercer was his mother's youngest brother, and had been in Azkaban for years. Even before he was sent there, he'd apparently been considered unstable by the rest of his family. From the sound of it, Cassie was showing some of the same twisted personality traits as her father. Her mother's weakness - both physical and emotional - had only made things worse.
Anyway, he'd tried, Daemon told himself. He caught Jessika's eye and grinned at her. "You almost done? Want to take a quick run outside before class? I could do with some fresh air."

Scorpius walked to an empty spot at the Slytherin table, nodding a greeting at the little group of students nearby. He sat down, and started to eat, but before he'd even chewed his first mouthful, Cassie Mercer poked him. He looked up, frowning, and found that she was shoving a copy of the Daily Prophet at him. Reluctantly, he took the newspaper, noting the malicious grin on the younger student's face. What was the kid up to now? He looked down at the newspaper, folded so that the first thing he saw was a photograph... of his own parents. His father standing beside his mother, who was sitting in an elaborately-carved chair. He squinted at the picture, noting the way that his mother smiled up at his father, then looked down at a bundle in her arms. Frowning, Scorpius began to read the accompanying caption: Prominent pureblood wizard Mr Draco Malfoy, and his wife, welcome the birth of their son, Thanatos Abraxas. "It is, of course, a proud day when one welcomes one's son and heir," Mr Malfoy told our reporter... There was more, but Scorpius was staring at the three words '...son and heir...' Suddenly it made sense. His mother's absence from that interview months ago, his father's willingness to disown him. He'd known then. Known that he could disown his oldest son, because another heir was soon to be born. "Congratulations, Malfoy."Scorpius looked up at Cassie, who was grinning broadly. Well, everyone knew Cassie Mercer was a psychotic little bitch. No doubt she would find this hilarious. Ignoring her he got up, and turned to scan the Gryffindor table. Rose wouldn't mock him about this. But - where was Rose?

Jessika grinned as Daemon spoke. "Yeah, come on, let's go. Fresh air sounds good," she agreed. She HATED spending too much time around Cassie, she freaked her out. Quickly finishing off her plate of food, she stood up. "Where'd you want to go?" she asked him.

Daemon grinned, sensing Jessika's relief at getting away from Cassie. "How about down by the lake?" he suggested. He pushed his plate away and got up. He noticed that Scorpius was staring at the newspaper Cassie had shoved at him. He looked kind of pale - well, even paler than usual. But before he could say anything, Scorpius got up, turning towards the Gryffindor table. Oh well, he'd ask him later if something was wrong.
He smiled at Jessika. "Let's go."

Rose wouldn't mock him about this. But - where was Rose? Rose walked into the Great Hall, her large tummy protruding out in front of her. Her eyes scanned the Hall for Scorpius, and saw him standing up, looking towards the Gryffindor Table. She walked over to him, he looked sort of distressed. "Hey," she said as she reached him. "What's up?" she asked, her eyes flicking to the disgarded Daily Prophet on the table. She gasped and snatched it up. "Oh," she murmured looking up at Scorpius. "Oh dear."

Scorpius couldn't see Rose at the Gryffindor table. He turned away, and almost bumped into her! "Rose - how are you feeling today?" Despite the shock he'd just had, he felt a familiar jump of happiness when he saw her. Then she grabbed the paper, and read the article about his parents. He sighed.
"Yeah - explains why he was so quick to disown me. I should have known he wouldn't jeopardise the precious family name unless he knew he could replace me quickly." He shook his head. "Well, it's not like it makes a difference now, is it. Anyway, we've got our own baby to think about." He patted her tummy gently. "Don't you have a checkup with the nurse today?"

"I'm great," Rose assured him when he asked. As he spoke about his father, she sighed, shaking her head. Then, he started talking about their baby, and patted her belly. "Yeah, this afternoon. Did you want to come? She's going to tell me if we're having a girl or a boy," she told him excitedly.

Scorpius grinned. "Yeah - of course I'll come with you. I hope it's a girl - so long as she looks like her mum." He put his arm around her. "You know, I actually feel sorry for my little brother. I know exactly what kind of upbringing that poor kid will have. Don't suppose I'll ever be allowed to meet him, though." He glanced down at his plate, and decided he could manage without breakfast today.
"What's your first lesson? I'll walk you there if you like."

Rose smiled happily at him. "Yeah, I want a girl too," she chuckled. She smiled as his arm went around her. "Scorp, I'm sure there'll be some time that you'll be able to meet him. Maybe some time along the track, but still. Our kids'll be going to school together!" she exclaimed, it suddenly hitting her. "That'll be wierd." When asked what her class was, she thought for a second. "Ummmmm, History of Magic,"she groaned.

Scorpius nodded. "Yeah - I hadn't thought of that. They'll be in the same year." Now that was a really weird thought! "History of Magic?" He smiled at Rose. "Well, at least you can take a nap. I'm supposed to have DADA, but Professor Desjardins is sick or something, so I have a free."
He put his arm around Rose as they began to walk out of the Great Hall. He was pretty much used to the idea of having been disowned, but the news that his parents now had a new heir was quite a shock. He sighed. "I suppose in the back of my mind, I was hoping that one day my dad might change his mind, but i guess now he has another son, there's no reason for him to go back on disowning me."
Thank Merlin he had Rose to talk to.

"She's sick? I hope she's okay," Rose murmured. "I'd rather a free to nap in than History of Magic. I - unfortunately - take after my mother - I like paying attention in class," she chuckled. His arm went around her, and she smiled, it dropping slightly as he spoke. "I don't know. Maybe something'll happen to your - never mind - that's not nice to think about."

Scorpius shook his head. "I don't want anything to happen to that poor kid, it's not his fault. And - well, in a way it's a relief not to have all the pressure of being the Malfoy heir. It's just - I'd like to think that I could have some contact with my family eventually. My mother, anyway." When Rose mentioned her mother, Scorpius remembered something he'd been meaning to ask Rose. "Did you hear anything else from your mum about the job she mentioned?" In her last letter, Mrs Weasley had said she'd had an idea about a possible summer job for Scorpius.

"Maybe it'll all die down a little bit, in a while. Our baby'll be born in a few months, and then it should die down. People seem to think its more scandalous when the girl is pregnant, when the baby actually comes along, it doesn't seem to be as big a deal. But then, we'll be in the paper - not them," Rose chuckled.
When he mentioned her mother, she shrugged. "Ummm - she said something about helping out in a shop. I'll owl her and ask if she'd made any actual plans or not. She said she was keeping the whole 'cleaning up the hospital' thing as a last resort, she doesn't really want to degrade you to that."

Scorpius tightened his arm slightly round Rose's shoulders. "I wouldn't feel degraded - not if it helps support you and our baby. I'd be proud to clean up at the hospital." He smiled at Rose. "But a shop would probably be interesting. Did she say what sort of shop?"

Rose chuckled. "Are you just the most corniness person around?" she giggled, reaching up to tap his cheek affectionately. She shrugged. "Ummm - I think it's someone she knows, but I can't remember exactly. I think my memory's being affected by all this!" she joked. They were nearly at her class now, she didn't want to leave him. "Maybe I could just ditch," she suggested randomly.
